This is a great example of a nutting stone that also shows signs of use as a hammerstone. Both sides are deeply indented. The one end is nicked and chipped showing signs of use as a hammerstone. One side has many parallel cut marks that show signs of heavy use. These pitted rocks were used for various jobs. This one has been smoothed on both sides from being used as a grind stone. The indentations made a great spot to grip the stone to use as a hammer stone to possibly chip flint for making tools. It was probably also used to hold the spindle of a fire starter. The indentations were also used to grind and crack nuts. (thus the name) These were used by the First Peoples throughout ancient American history so it could be 300 to 11,000 years old.
