History of the Artist
Martha Hinson (1925–2016) was a native Tennessean artist from Centerville, TN. She was a self-taught artist who became well-known for her whimsical and detailed etchings, particularly those featuring animals, Victorian architecture, and nostalgic historical scenes.
Technique: She specialized in hand-colored etchings. This involves a metal plate being engraved or "etched" with the design, which is then inked and pressed onto paper. After the print is made, she often hand-tinted areas with color (like the red scarf on your mouse).
Legacy: Her work was highly popular in the 1970s and 80s, often sold at craft fairs and in gift shops. In 1978, she was even commissioned to create historical portrayals for the Hyatt Regency in Nashville.
